Surprise flashmob in front of the Tirana University unveils the 10-meter-long LGBTI flag

Tirana, May 17, 2023 - A surprise flashmob in front of the University of Tirana, in "Mother Theresa" Square in the capital of Albania, was organised by the PINK Embassy and its partners to unveiled the LGBTI flag, which was about 10 meters long. The flashmob marks the opening of the week-long activities related to 17 May - International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Lesbophobia.

"This is the 14th year that the LGBTI flag is raised every 17 of May in Tirana in all its colours, to break the fears, taboos and prejudices that surround the life of the LGBTI community and persons in Albania" - said Altin Hazizaj, President of the PINK Embassy.

The flashmob that lasted for about 10 minutes unveiled a flag that for PINK Embassy is of great historical value. It was produced in Albania by a Muslim family, and it has been used in every Pride march from 2014 to the present. Flashmob was joined by friends and colleagues from OMSA Albania, Council of Europe, CRCA/ECPAT Albania, parents, etc. This is the first time that the flag is raised in a flashmob, as it is usually placed on the columns of the Palace of Culture in Tirana. The organisers decided this year to raise the LGBTI flag in a different form that could engage more with the public.
