6th FESTIVAL OF DIVERSITY AND IDAHOT WEEK STARTS IN ALBANIA

Under the slogan “Stand up against Discrimination” the one-week Festival brings together the LGBT community, organizations and institutions to promote human rights of LGBT persons in Albania

Tirana May 16, 2016 - Under the slogan " Stand up against Discrimination", PINK Embassy / LGBT Pro Albania, Human Rights House in Albania (HRHA), the Albanian National Youth Network and Open Mind Spectrum Albania – OMSA, opened today the 6th Festival of Diversity and public awareness week in the framework of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Bifobia (IDAHOT).

The Festival of Diversity takes place across Albania from 16-20 May 2016. This year's Diversity Week aims to raise public awareness and involvement of public institutions to ensuring equal rights for LGBT persons without fear of discrimination and social exclusion. The 6th Festival of Diversity is an event that has had so far the greatest social impact in Albania. It’s organized every year by PINK Embassy ​​in cooperation with allies and supporters from all over Albania and the world. Since the beginning of the Festival in 2010, it has engaged more than 6,000 people, making the festival a week of disussions and promotion of LGBT rights.

OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION “LABYRINTH”, reflecting perceptions of local government officials and teachers across 6 regions of Albania on LGBT people.

30 People of the Year 2015 for LGBT Rights – a yearly event to publically recognise the 30 people of the year who have contributed for the advancement of the LGBT rights in Albania.

17.00 – 19.00 MULTI-LANGUAGES CAFE' (Special Edition) @ Tirana Youth Centre

Multi-Languages Cafe' is a linguistic program in Tirana that provide a free space for everyone to practice languages by informal method and education. In the framework of IDAHO 2016, the event will raise awareness on the importance of the day.

10.00 – 12.00 OPEN LECTURE! @ University of Tirana, Department of Sociology

Perceptions of local public officials towards LGBT People in Albania - an open lecture based on the final results of the first study to be carried out in Albania on perceptions and beliefs of local public officials towards the LGBT community.

13.00 – 15.00 DOCUMENTARY “OUT & ABOUT” @ TIRANA YOUTH CENTRE (PART 1)

Screening of the documentary “Out & About” regarding the LGBT issue. This documentary will be screened in collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy and Albanian National Youth network.

YOUTH TALK! @ Tirana Youth Center (PART 2)

Linus Lundby, a young intern from Sweden, working at OLOF Palme Center and HRH / CRCA Albania, talks with young people from ANYN and Tirana’s Youth Leadership on LGBT issues.

17.00 – 18.00 LGBT CONCEPTS & RIGHTS @ University of New York, Tirana

Experts of the Human Rights and PINK Embassy have been invited to an open lecture at one of the best private universities in Tirana to discuss with the students LGT concepts, while provide information on the advancement of LGBT rights in Albania.

WEDNESDAY 18 MAY 2016

11.00 – 13.00 YOUTH and EDUCATION @ Hotel Tirana International

Discrimination against LGBT adolescents in Albania. Presentation of the findings of the study “Experiences of discrimination of adolescents in schools”. PINK Embassy will make public the preliminary results of its first ever study on young people attending pre-university education and their discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity in Albania.

9.30 – 13.00 OMSA - POLITICAL FORUM ON LGBT RIGHTS @ Tirana Palace of Culture, “Nënë Tereza” Hall.

The Forum is organized by Open Mind Spectrum Albania (OMSA), Labris and Victory institute. This event aims at opening a broader dialogue on the inclusion of LGBTI issues in the political programmes of the political parties in Albania, as well as address the political participation of LGBTI people in the country. It is envisaged as a gathering place of representatives between political parties, representatives from foreign embassies and missions, as well as of activists for LGBTI rights from Albania and the region.

18.00 OMSA - SCREENING OF “MILK” @ Destil Hostel Tirana

The story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official.

Open Mind Spectrum Albania organises “Panel Discussion: IDAHOT – Strategies on cultivating allies and combating discrimination”. After the screening of the documentary an open discussion will follow.

FRIDAY 20 MAY 2016

11.00 DIALOGUE DAY @ Albanian Parliament (tbc)

Hearing session at the Albanian Parliament on LGBT rights situation in the country. Focus will be to continue the dialogue with the MP’s on the implementation of the first ever Resolution on LGBT rights of the Parliament of Albania.
