PINK Embassy and CRCA Albania hold workshop on new approaches to counter online hate speech and disinformation

Tirana, 30 October 2025 – PINK Embassy Albania and CRCA Albania, with the support of the Council of Europe, organised a workshop entitled “Exploring new approaches and narratives to counter hate speech and disinformation targeting LGBTIQ+ persons and other vulnerable groups in Albania.”

The event brought together representatives of state institutions, human rights organisations, as well as members of LGBTIQ+ communities, women’s organisations, the Roma and Egyptian communities, and persons with disabilities. The aim of the meeting was to foster joint reflection on the most effective ways to build an inclusive society free from hate and discrimination.

During the workshop, key issues related to the spread of hate speech and disinformation were addressed, particularly across digital platforms and traditional media. Discussions also focused on Albania’s obligations within the European Union accession process, the need to strengthen the legal framework, and the legal and societal mechanisms required to address these phenomena effectively.

Participants highlighted the importance of developing positive and inclusive narratives that promote respect, acceptance, and the protection of human rights. It was also noted that in recent years there has been a noticeable increase in attacks against LGBTIQ+ organisations, as well as organisations working on gender equality and women’s rights, largely driven by anti-rights and anti-gender movements. This trend is having a direct impact on civic space, freedom of expression, and democratic discourse in the country.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a set of concrete recommendations was presented to improve policies and practices aimed at preventing hate speech. These included strengthening ethical standards in communication, improving public and media communication, and promoting respect for diversity.

This workshop represents an important step in the joint efforts of PINK Embassy and CRCA Albania to advance human rights, equality, and tolerance in Albania, in line with European standards.
